A chemical peel is a treatment where a product containing an acid ingredient is applied to the skin. This exfoliates the skin, causing the top layer to peel off and reveal the smoother, healthier skin underneath.
Chemical peels are very versatile treatments which can be used to treat a wide range of skin concerns such as; fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin tone, sun damage, acne scarring, enlarged pores, age spots and hyperpigmentation.
There are several types of chemical peels which are superficial chemical peels, medium peels, and deep peels. The depth and intensity of the chemical peel can vary depending on the specific formula used and the patient's skin type and desired results.
The chemical peel procedure starts with a consultation to determine your eligibility for treatment, as well as which chemical peel is best for the skin concerns you’re looking to treat. Before treatment, your skin will be cleansed to ensure a blank canvas for application. The chemical solution will be applied and left on for a specified amount of time, depending on the type of peel and active ingredient. Once the peel is ready to come off, a neutralizing agent will be added to stop its activity. You’ll be given post-procedure instructions to help you care for your skin as it heals.
During a superficial or medium chemical peel, it’s normal to feel a tingling sensation. Some patients may feel a mild burning sensation but you should not experience any pain. This will subside after the solution is removed. If you’re feeling nervous, let your practitioner know and they can help you feel relaxed and comfortable during your procedure.
It’s extremely important to avoid heat and the sun after a chemical peel. Ensure to wear daily SPF while your skin is sensitive and healing. You should also avoid picking at the peeling skin and allow it to heal naturally. Make sure to moisturize your skin regularly and avoid any exfoliating ingredients or acid ingredients.
When you come in for a consultation for your skin treatment, we can help determine how often you should be getting chemical peels. It will vary from person to person based on your skin type, skin history and skin concerns. With superficial peels, some people may get a chemical peel once a month, whereas with a medium peel you may only need treatments a few times per year.
For most peels, you’ll see results approximately a week after treatment. Your skin may peel or flake for a few days immediately after treatment. It’s important to let your skin heal naturally and not pick at the skin or irritate it. Once it’s healed, you’ll be left with brighter, more even looking skin.
